Replacing the Chairman's game is Brentham Away

2003/4 season

Meadhurst vs Brentham Away - Meadhurst win 3-0

The fixture that Steve Harrison refused to contemplate (too far away) and the scene of our worst display of last season (a 6-2 drubbing in the pouring rain) was a much happier outing this time.

Things wobbled during the week with a number of late withdrawals and lots of rain putting the fixture in doubt. But, come Sunday morning, things were much brighter. We scrabbled together 12 players and everyone of them found the ground. On hand was the best pitch we have played on this year and the bright sunshine was blinding across the pitch rather than along it. The scene was set for a classic vets encounter. Both teams endeavoured to do it justice.

Brentham play neat passing football and have some useful players who posed questions throughout the game but they never really put Meadhurst in difficulty. Which was just as well because Meadhurst were making it difficult for themselves - too often we gave the ball away cheaply. Perhaps it was the shock of playing on a pitch that didn't provide excuses for incompetence. Anyway Brentham had a shot from outside the area in the first half that forced a fine save from Colin and a breakaway saw the Brentham forward evade Dick and shoot just wide but apart from that they were restricted to long range efforts.

Dick was back in his usual spot after the adventures of playing in the forward line last week while Rob Sage was given the midfield to play in. The plan worked, Dick had one of those brilliant games where the oppo seem to pass to him all the time while Rob enjoyed himself and it was his cross into the box that Dene nodded in to give Meadhurst the lead. Cuzzy picked up an injury and Rob was shifted to centre back (much to his disgust) while Dave Ferguson came on upfront.

The score stayed 1-0 for a long time into the second half giving Brentham hope until a poor clearance bounced kindly for Meadhurst i.e. it fell to Dave Ferguson on the edge of the box who thumped it into the net. Dave added a second as Brentham pushed men forward and Dene almost got a fourth. Brentham keep going and indeed got the ball into the Meadhurst net finally but sadly for them 2 seconds after the final whistle had blown.

The team played well once we learnt to keep the ball on the ground with good performances from Don White and Dene up front and Ken in defence. Mike Petch was heroic - keeping going despite a badly swollen ankle. Good though the game was the best bit about this fixture is the club house and bar afterward and this didn't disappoint.
