2003/4 - Match report - a 4-1 loss
Meadhurst vs Staines Town at Home -
Meadhurst play well but lose
Attempts to strengthen the team by giving Mark
Beach an outing and extracting Dave Ferguson from the Chiropractor's
couch failed at the last minute. Jack was reduced to Saturday night
phone calls and hoping someone was at home (but that his wife doesn't
answer the phone). Actually Fossie's wife did, but after some routine
protests ("you've ruined my life" etc) she was charming and
allowed Fossie out to play.
The football was competitive stuff on the small
pitch. Staines have some interesting characters, the centre back/ nightclub
bouncer left an impression on several of the mild mannered Meadhurst
forwards while even on the touchline there were some lively moments. The
Staines linesman became so excited he felt the need to point out that he had
forgotten more than Jack ever knew about football. Jack readily agreed and
explained that his poor memory must be the reason why he didn't now
understand the off side rule. The flow of conversation faltered at this
point but not only did the linesman improve his grasp of the rules the
robust Meadhurst display kept the play on the pitch firm but fair.
Meadhurst matched Staines in all departments -
the tactical adjustment of playing Brockwell as a forward worked (nearly
scoring) and Meadhurst kept a good shape playing more in Staines half than
their own. Both teams had chances - Petch hitting the bar - but neither
scored. Nevertheless Meadhurst looked slightly the better side at half
time.
The second half started well for Meadhurst but a
long clearance for the Spelthorne keeper cleared Rob Sage (playing
sweeper while Dick sauntered around upfront), bounced once kindly for the
Staines forward who slotted it home. I do feel that if Staines hadn't scored
we would have won ! After that we had to chase the game a little,
losing our shape at times. Even worse, playing into the low, bright sun
made it difficult to find our men with the ball coming out of defence and
hard to construct decisive attacks. Staines added a second from a defensive
error but Meadhurst then scored the best goal of the game. A fine cross from
Dogga found Tony rising between two defenders to glance the ball into the
corner. At 2-1 down we were well in the game but more defensive errors as we
pushed forward gave Staines the win 4-1.
A good outing from Meadhurst - we played well
against a good side and have nothing to fear in the return fixture.

At Home vs Hanworth
A 4-0 win -but it wasn't that easy. Fortunately
we dominated the central midfield and isolated their forwards. They were
strong down the wings but Roy and Julian did better. Goals for Seaforth,
Huxley, Winch and Ferguson. A frustrating day for Hanworth.
