Match Report 2002/3
The morning began with a dressing room drama. Only
10 players, no keeper, and remarkably no Dick Brockwell. Joey made a couple of
phone calls and was able to confirm that Dick was on his way. He arrived with
time to spare and didn't argue when told he was going in goal. Indeed he
seemed strangely subdued all morning.
Even though the pitch contained 3 swamps it was a
carpet compared with Meadhurst. Despite having the lions share of the
possession (against the wind) Meadhurst conceded two goals in the first
half, their closest effort coming from Mike Petch who hit the post.
In the second half Meadhurst dragged themselves
out of the swamp. With Dick in goal all coaching responsibilities were left
with Andy Keywood who coped admirably. Although not a large number of chances
were created, Driscoll battled, the back 3 of Cozens, Sage and Gibson
held firm and sprayed the ball around. Tony Barber worked tirelessly and
caused no end of trouble for the Richmond Lock defence. Dogger was getting
involved in everything and despite severe provocation refused to be drawn into
fighting with an opposition midfielder who is clearly tired of living.
Deep into the second half Carl won a challenge in
midfield, laid the ball out to Dogger who crossed for Don to finish in
predatory fashion. With the pressure piling on Meadhurst had a succession of
corners, taken by Andy Keywood, and with about a minute left on the clock he
flighted one directly into the net to secure the draw which was the
least we deserved.
