Match Report 2002/3
Meadhurst venture into new territory
Well not really as it was a home fixture but new
opponents anyway. They arrived late without their kit and goalkeeper and a
bare 11 players - Cuzzy and Jack were not impressed. But things improved and
we had decent outing.
Availability was mixed and the team had an
experimental air in some departments. Some unfamiliar faces graced the
Meadhurst turf as Ian Bolter and Tony Huxley made all too rare appearances. Cuzzy
and Dick, Mike Petch and Carl Drisol through the middle provided a very solid
core. Dene and Don up front had a good day too with Dene converting a penalty
for the Meadhurst opener and Don coming as close as it gets twice without
actually scoring. In fact the forwards contributed more than goals,
holding up the ball and linking the play well. This combined with an
increasingly adventurous midfield ( last time I let Fred of his full back
leash) meant the oppo, despite having ambition, were increasingly pinned in
their own half. A second goal was inevitable and Huxley's cross/
shot came close but eventually Dogga slotted one home. In fact Meadhurst
should have taken more advantage of the stand in keeper before the real
one turned up. Still, 2-0 at half time.
Fred was substituted by Barber but Huxley was
playing a second good game in a row at left back and Mike and Carl were
outstanding in midfield so Jack come on for Dene. The oppo took this as a cue
to push players forward and the second half was a little unsatisfactory as
Meadhurst failed to find the passes out of defence to expose the over
committed C&K but with C&K unable to create any penetration with the
extra forwards. Dick, showing concentration and an unusual ability to keep his
head over the ball powered a low drive through a crowded penalty
area to make it 3-0 but shortly after evened things up by having a mix up with
Colin to let the best C&K forward in to make it 3-1. A shame as Colin had
been outstanding in the first half and looked set for a clean sheet. Meadhurst
continued to look comfortable without being in control but a smart move saw
Don cross from the left and Tony Barber side footing the ball in at the far
post in some style. Again Meadhurst felt the need to help the oppo - this time
Bolts marred an otherwise very competent return by messing up an easy
clearance to allow C&K to lob a stranded Colin.
So it finished 4-2. Meadhurst were guilty of
working to get on top, allowing the pressure to drop and letting the oppo back
into it - but all in all a comfortable win. Meadhurst club excelled themselves
by providing adequate food on time and even provided plates ! The oppo also
bought Cuzzy a beer and that combined with letting Dick score probably means
we will keep the fixture.
