Match Report 2002/3
Match Report 2001/2 Another 4-0 win a frozen pitch made it hard for both sides but we were stronger and coped better. We almost didn't play - but the three week lay off encouraged everyone to give it a go. Interestingly they opted for a 4-3-3 which confused our midfield for a while (we had elected to play 4-4-2) especially as we had new boy Mike Petch in the centre with Gary. Difficult to say who was more surprised - Gary because someone was running around (Jack normally makes Gary look good) or Mike because he normally plays in defence. Still we worked it out and while Old Hamptonian's tried to move us around and make things happen the defence was sound and the midfield made good use of the numerical superiority going forward. Julian, Bolt's and Robin worked well in space down the right side. In fact from the outset Meadhurst were more intent on bringing the ball under control and using it well in difficult conditions and got their reward when shortly before half time Roy stabbed one in after some ping pong in the penalty area. The second half could have gone badly - Martin (left back) and Jack (centre midfield) came on for the injured Robin and unlucky Mike Dixon (who had had a very good first half). Mike Petch was pushed up to support Don White. In fact Old Hamptonians had become discouraged and lost shape and effectiveness. Fortunately as turned out as we then lost first Julian and then Roy to injury - Martin playing in midfield is always interesting, usually for the opposition. Not surprisingly we lost shape too, as we failed to adjust to the changes and Martin's curious positional sense, but not before scoring 3 more goals. A Don White cross was misjudged by the keeper for Petch to nod in. Jack crossed after a short corner for Mike to glance in and Jack hit a low corner to Cuzzy to hit "a la Sheringham" - but he missed the ball and Gary stabbed it between the keeper's legs. Meadhurst worked hard to ensure that Petch got a hat-trick and the chance to buy beer but to no avail and the best chance fell to Jack. He brilliantly anticipated Don's miss-hit shot across the goal mouth but rather less brilliantly missed the goal from one yard. Good performances from Glen (who had some work to do second half) , Ian Bolter and a full game from Don White were all very welcome. Team R Cozens, J Frost, D Brockwell, M Atkins, I Bolter, G Seaforth (1), J Harnor, G Jones, R Lewis, R Partington (1), D White, M Petch (2), M Dixon
