Match Report 2002/3

Meadhurst vs Old Lats 23rd March

Usual story - huge pitch, lost a player or two en route. In previous years a prelude to a thumping loss. Not this year - a search party found the lost goal keeper and we adapted to absence of Dave Ferguson with the tactics that worked well against Lensbury.

A 4-5-1 formation put an extra man in midfield and allowed us to use the width of the pitch by keeping Fozzy and Dogga out wide with Petch or Driscol joining the attacks from central midfield secure in the knowledge that Rob Sage was minding the shop. Defensively, while it was easy for their fullbacks to pick up the ball, it was difficult for them to find anyone to pass to. It worked a treat - they are a good side with some very handy players but we regularly frustrated their attacks and reduced them to chipping the ball behind the defence - which Keywood and Brockwell saw off very nicely.

Actually we played a little too deep to start, with Sage trapped in the back line (habit of course) but as the confidence grew we pushed on while keeping the shape well and just before half time took a deserved lead with a good goal. We broke up an attack and Brockwell hit a peach of a diagonal ball for Dogga to steal in behind the defence and guide it home.

They equalised soon in the second half when a defensive error allowed a quick cross and a very good strike gave Colin Rendell no chance. Although we had been on top both teams were tired and the next goal was likely to settle it. It came to Meadhurst with a quick break that put Dogga through one on one with the keeper. Dogga miss-hit it, the keeper miss-saved it and it bounced high off his outstretched body to fall just under the bar. Meadhurst were well on top now and gained full control with two Dene Winch goals that owed much to Dene's persistence and the keeper's indifferent handling.

In truth this was one of our better games, we worked very hard, keep to our plan and run out good winners against a good side.

A 4-1 win to Meadhurst

2001/2 Season match report

A 4-3 loss - not bad considering we were 4-0 down 10 mins into the second half
