Match Report

Meadhurst Vets at Home vs Brentham a 4-1 win

After the 6-2 loss away (mitigating circumstances, crap team, crap conditions and crap management) Meadhurst were up for this and despite the prematch disappointment (no Martin Atkins, Jack back in the side and no Dave Ferguson) everyone was out on the pitch warming up early. A sad mistake as the weather was freezing cold and the oppo were late. Maybe that's why we took some time to get going ? More likely the diabolical pitch (100% divots) and the spoiling tactics of the oppo (more pushes, ankle taps, blatant fouls and occasional GBH than we have met in a long time) conspired to keep Meadhurst from finding any sort rhythm.

Brentham got the better of a scrappy first half and they missed a number of good opportunities (Colin making good saves when the forward had only the keeper to beat). It took a harsh decision against Andy Keywood to give Brentham the first goal. A ball crossed along the face of the goal bounced of Andy's shin and Colin picked it up. The ref decided pass back and the oppo thumped the free kick in from 3 yards. Meadhurst were galvanised by this and got a little more competitive to put Brentham under sustained pressure. In due course a Keywood corner hit a few players and found its way into the net with Cuzzy claiming the goal -1-1 at half time.

It was so cold that the subs were desperate to either get on the pitch or go to the bar. Dene was ready to run around and shortly into the second half gave a fine display of forward power to knock the ball pass the defenders into the area and slot the ball calmly past the advancing keeper, 2-1 Meadhurst.

Meadhurst took control for while thereafter and a Brockwell free kick bounced of the keeper's chest for Driscol, following up smartly, to wallop into the net from 2 yds. 3-1 Meadhurst. Brentham raised their game at this point and caused Meadhurst a few problems but Huxley and the defence stayed firm and with 7 mins to go Jack felt it safe to withdraw a hobbling Lewis and bring himself on. Immediately Keywood cleared the ball to Jack on the half way line who slotted it inside the full back to Dene in full flight. The cross found Lucas to pass into an empty goal. Dogga's marker muttered darkly about foul play, but I was closer than the ref and agreed that even if we had be playing Arsenal at Highbury the defender wouldn't have been given the foul.

We could have had a 5th goal shortly after as Carl beat a player or two and hit the bar. Brockwell wanted to thump the rebound hard into the trees (he had been practising throughout the game) but Jack felt he was equally capable of missing from close range, and so it proved.

Mike and Carl were heroes for eventually winning a bruising midfield battle and Dene hustled the Brentham defence to good effect when he came on. Fozzie had to work hard tracking the Brentham left midfielder who looked (and run) like someone a bit less than 35.

Actually at my age, everyone is starting to look too young for vets. Sad isn't it.

Match report 2002/3 away game

A 6-2 loss

Cuzzy signed up to the away fixture Steve Harrison has always refused to do. Too far away was Steve's reason but Steve obviously had a premonition - we lost 6-2 to a team that despite running us close every year never beats us. Of course, 5 drop outs on Friday didn't help and it took some fancy footwork to retain our proud record of always fielding a full eleven. Sadly the footwork didn't help on the most waterlogged pitch we have played on - the groundsman will not have been pleased on Monday. Rob Sage got the best deal - opting to accept tickets for a rather good Spurs - Arsenal game, even Winging Wenger had to admit that Spurs started a bit quicker than the Frenchmen

Match report 2001/2

A 7-2 win vs Brentham.

Both teams had lively forwards but the Meadhurst midfield denied the Brentham forwards the service while the Brentham defense proved vulnerable in the air conceding 4 headed goals, with three from set pieces. 3-0 at half time rather flattered Meadhurst and the second half was less convincing still. We lost shape when Jack limped off and tried moving Dick into midfield. The back four struggled without Dick for a while but Brentham had run out of steam by then and thanks to some fine saves from Glen and a good goal from Dene Meadhurst ran out deserving winners.
